In Our Words

San Antonio Public Library, Texas

Education - Children & Adults | 2016

Innovation Synopsis

“In Our Words” was designed to showcase the work of Learn at SAPL’s ESL students with varying levels of language proficiency, and to familiarize them with the writing and drafting process in English. The culmination of the project was a book release reception for the students and their families.

Challenge/Opportunity

The ESL component of the Learn at SAPL center’s mission is to make English learning opportunities as accessible as possible to San Antonio residents. The “In Our Words” project presented a unique opportunity for learners to share their backgrounds in a comfortable setting while learning to utilize the drafting and re-writing process as a means of improving their English language skills. This exercise was designed to respond to the lack of classroom time available for students to work on writing skills. A large amount of time and individual attention is needed, particularly for learners overcoming language barriers.

Key Elements of Innovation

The project began with an open invitation to all ESL learners at the three Learn at SAPL centers that offer ESL instruction. Students were prompted to write, in broad terms, about their past experiences that have helped to define who they are now, and then to reflect upon where they see themselves in the future. This provided an opportunity for Training Officers to introduce computers, software, and other technology that the learners may not have access to in their daily lives. The final product is an inspiring snapshot of the unique and diverse community that makes up San Antonio.

Achieved Outcomes

The “In Our Words” Anthology is a printed collection of personal narratives from 27 individuals from eight different countries (Brazil, Somalia, Japan, Guinea Bissau, the Republic of the Congo, Azerbaijan, The United States, and Mexico) as well as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The individuals whose stories were featured range in age from their early 20s to their late 70s. It is truly a celebration of the accomplishments of Learn at SAPL’s English Language Learners. Each contributing student was presented with a copy of the book at a formal reception where Library administrators recognized the work of the students.
